Our Year 6 students have enjoyed an amazing time at Ballarat’s magnificent living museum, Sovereign Hill. There was great enthusiasm for dressing in period costume and learning more about the ‘goldrush’ era of the 1850’s. During this phase in Australian history migrants from around the world landed on Australian shores and headed to emerging towns like Ballarat in pursuit of wealth.

During their stay in the goldfields region, the students also learnt of the Eureka Rebellion, a conflict initiated by the gold miners of Ballarat who revolted against the colonial authority of the United Kingdom. That situation culminated in the ‘Battle of the Eureka Stockade’, which was widely regarded as a seminal moment in the beginning of democracy in Australia.
