Term 3 is now well and truly underway and although the days are still cold and daylight hours short, it is good to be back into the swing of things again. The winter break was timely for everyone, a busy but thoroughly enjoyable one for me. I attended the Australian Conference on Lutheran Education (ACLE) in the first week of the break with 1,000 others and heard from some fascinating speakers and spent time networking with professionals from other Lutheran schools across Australia.

On Friday 7 July, I flew back from Adelaide to meet up with my wife Libby at the airport, just in time to board the plane for Port Vila, Vanuatu and meet up with the group of 12 senior students and four staff members from GLC. These students were the inaugural group participating in the Vanuatu Cultural Adventure Tour; a dream I have held since the College opened in 2009. It was an honour to share a part of this experience with these impressive young adults, and special for us to share the story of the Melanie Jewson Memorial Chapel with them whilst sitting in the building with them. It is an experience, my wife Libby and I will always treasure.

You may, or may not have noticed that a great deal of work was conducted around St John’s during the break. Our Facilities Manager, Brent Balboni and Business Manager, Andrew Dowd organised external painting of various areas, some roof repairs, painting inside the Kindergarten, installation of TV’s for presentations in various rooms and some internal furniture upgrades in the staffroom and meeting room. As part of the School Council’s planning for St John’s we also met with Ian Bently of McGlashan Everist Architects to investigate some possibilities for improving the front fence presentation to the community along Aberdeen Street and Pakington Street. Ian designed the ANZAC walk at the entrance to St John’s, so has a good sense of our school and we are looking forward to reviewing his proposals for installation later in the year.

Mrs Sue Ellis, the new Campus Principal for St John’s will be visiting from the 14th – 16th August and then again at the beginning of Term 4. We will provide some opportunities for parents to meet her and I know she is looking forward to joining us from the beginning of 2018. Mr Steven Tkaczuk is returning next week and will be Acting Campus Principal for the rest of the term and Mrs Jeanette Pelchen will take over this role again in Term 4 so that Steve can spend the all-important Term 4 with his students in the classroom.
