The Co-Curricular

INNOVATIVE CURRICULUM

St. John’s is an innovative school with dedicated teachers who implement and evaluate new curriculum and programs.  We acknowledge the individuality of children, their differing learning styles and their multiple intelligences. Our curriculum is structured to cater for the whole child.  Children are encouraged to think creatively using thinking skills – De Bono, Blooms Taxonomy and PMI thinking.

CO-CURRICULAR

There are a number of opportunities for children to be involved in activities beyond the classroom.  Children can participate in: School choir, Talent quest, Sports – netball, interschool competition, softball, football, athletics, cross-country, swimming, debating and Tournament of Minds.

CAMPS & EXCURSIONS

Children may be involved in camps and excursions from time to time during their schooling to enable them to further their learning and social/emotional skills development in a non-school setting. Excursions and camps may have a cultural, environmental or outdoor emphasis and are an important aspect of the educational programs offered at our school. HOMEWORK

Homework benefits students by complementing classroom learning, fostering good study habits and providing an opportunity for students to be responsible for their own learning.

STUDENT WELFARE

St. John’s is dedicated to providing a safe and caring environment for all children.  The Pastoral Care Committee review programs and implement strategies; Assertive Discipline, Character Education (Healthy Relationships) and Children’s Honour awards, to ensure children’s security and safeness.  A buddy program is effectively implemented to assist the smooth transition of kindergarten children into the school.

LEADERSHIP

Although there are many opportunities for leadership throughout the school, the Graduation Class focus on developing whole school leadership.  Year 6 participate in Leadership training throughout the year and organise a Leadership Day for Year 5.  This day serves to assist Year 5 in their preparation for Leadership elections and to give them relevant skills they can utilise in the following year.  At the end of Year 5 children are elected to positions of responsibility in the school as captains of the school, sport, the Arts and Library.  In addition to these special duties the Graduation class take on responsibility in worship and other aspects of school life. The staff elects school Captains.
